Step Back in Time: Enter the Civil War from Within
After more than 40 years of hosting workshops, we’re inviting you into the story itself.

T&F Camera has served photographers for 78 years and hosted photography workshops for more than 40. In all that time, to our knowledge, no one has hosted a workshop quite like this—one that immerses attendees in the event itself as active participants. This fall, we invite you to experience something extraordinary: enter the Civil War reenactment as a credentialed field photographer and become part of the unfolding story.
From October 30 through November 1, T&F presents Workshop in the Woods “The Civil War.” This will transform your participation into an assignment. Enter the encampment as a member of the T&F Civil War Photography Corps, representing the North or South and tasked with creating a photographic narrative of the people, battles, and daily life around you.
You have a role. You have credentials. You have a story to tell from the inside.
Move among the troops as they prepare for action. Study a soldier’s expression before making a portrait. Follow the energy of a battle and its aftermath, then discover the quiet human moments that give the horrors of war their character. The people you photograph are the people you encounter within the experience. Their world becomes your working environment.
Your assignment: look beyond the obvious photograph. Establish the setting. Introduce the characters. Follow the action. Find the details that others overlook. Connect your images into a visual narrative that allows someone who was never there to feel the atmosphere and understand the story. Your photographs become your account of life within the 1860s encampment.
Your credentials are part of that immersion. Every photographer receives papers identifying the side they represent—North or South. If the troops request your credentials and you cannot produce the proper ones, you are “detained,” placed under guard as part of the reenactment. Even that encounter places you within the narrative. Keep your papers close; your assignment comes with an identity.
On Saturday, sit down to an encampment meal, provided as part of your workshop, with foods representative of those available during the Civil War. Sharing that meal brings you into the daily life you are there to document. You experience camp life firsthand, down to the food on your plate.
Guiding your assignment will be Rick Friedman, Rick Ferro, and Vanelli. Their expertise in photojournalism, portraiture, creative lighting, and editing will help you give the story depth and distinction. Instruction takes place within the experience, where techniques have an immediate purpose: capturing the people, atmosphere, and events that make your narrative compelling.
Your photographic adventure begins with the Palace of Depression pre-workshop in Vineland. Led by Rick Ferro, this session explores lighting, posing, and composition in an extraordinary setting whose character invites a fresh way of seeing. It prepares you to use your surroundings deliberately—a skill you will carry directly into your Civil War assignment.
Full three-day registration includes the Palace of Depression pre-workshop and a one-year subscription to Luminar Neo, extending the creative possibilities beyond the weekend.
The encampment will come to life for one weekend. This is your opportunity to enter it with a camera, a role, and a purpose—and create a body of work that carries the story you experienced.
Register today for Workshop in the Woods IV at T&F Camera’s Studio in the Woods, 1362 South Delsea Drive, Vineland, New Jersey. Accept the assignment. Report for duty. Create the story from the inside.
